November Gardening Checklist

A practical guide to flowers, fruit & veg, greenhouse care, and houseplants this month

 

 Flowers & Borders

  • Plant tulip bulbs in pots and borders.

  • Lift and store dahlia tubers after the first frost.

  • Order seed catalogues and plan for next year.

  • Plant bare-root hedging, roses, trees, and shrubs.

  • Clear faded climbers like sweet peas and morning glory.

  • Cut back tatty perennials and mulch the soil.

  • Plant a Japanese maple in a sheltered pot.

  • Remove diseased rose leaves to prevent black spot.

  • Move alpine plants under cover and refresh gravel mulch.

  • Protect borderline hardy plants (e.g. agapanthus) with mulch.

  • Guard young trees and shrubs against rabbits.

  • Sow seeds from berry-bearing trees and shrubs.

 

Fruit & Veg

  • Take hardwood cuttings from currants, blueberries, and gooseberries.

  • Use cloches to protect winter peas, beans, and salads.

  • Cut autumn raspberries down to the ground.

  • Plant garlic, shallots, and onions in raised beds, cover with fleece.

  • Prune dormant fruit bushes (currants, gooseberries).

  • Support Brussels sprouts with canes and soil mounds.

  • Cut down Jerusalem artichokes, store tubers in dry compost.

  • Net brassicas to protect from pigeons.

  • Plant bare-root fruit trees and bushes if soil isn’t waterlogged.

  • Check stored crops for rot.

  • Lift chicory roots to force in the dark.

  • Tidy strawberry beds, remove old foliage and weeds.

 

Greenhouse

  • Insulate walls and roof with bubble polythene.

  • Keep tender plants frost-free under cover.

  • Propagate perennials with root cuttings.

  • Sow rocket and leafy crops indoors for winter harvests.

  • Check plants for overwintering pests.

  • Scrub staging, glazing, and framework with disinfectant.

  • Water pots of spring bulbs regularly.

  • Wash and store empty pots and trays.

  • Bring herbs indoors for winter use.

  • Monitor temperatures and use heating if needed.

  • Avoid wetting foliage to prevent fungal disease.

  • Clear faded tomato and cucumber plants.

 

Houseplants

  • Increase humidity to offset central heating.

  • Feed weekly with liquid fertiliser.

  • Repot moth orchids after flowering.

  • Water less often and move off cold windowsills.

  • Plant amaryllis bulbs for festive blooms.

  • Bring outdoor houseplants back inside.

  • Repot top-heavy or root-bound plants.

  • Move plants to brighter spots for more light.

  • Wipe dust from leaves (e.g. snake plants).

  • Take leaf cuttings from African violets, begonias, and succulents.

  • Check for pests like aphids and mealybugs.

  • Hose down large-leaved plants to clean foliage.
